Best Places to See Fall Colors in Yosemite

Here is the first thing we would tell a friend planning a fall trip to Yosemite: do not expect one giant wall of color like New England. Yosemite does autumn its own way. You get flashes of gold, amber and red tucked between evergreen forest, pale granite cliffs and clear Sierra skies. It is less like a color explosion and more like nature showing off with excellent restraint.

The other thing to know is that there is no single perfect peak weekend. Elevation, temperature and weather all matter, so the color shifts around the region as the season moves along. October is usually the month to watch, with some lower-elevation color lingering into November. Think of it as a reason to explore, not a performance that starts at exactly 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Start with Yosemite Valley

If this is your first fall visit, begin in Yosemite Valley. You get the classic views and some of the easiest places to spot changing leaves in the same outing.

Walk through Cook’s Meadow, wander near Yosemite Chapel and keep an eye out for California black oaks, bigleaf maples, Pacific dogwoods and cottonwoods. The colors look especially good against El Capitan, Half Dome and the Valley walls. Morning and late afternoon usually give you softer light, but honestly, it is hard to make this place look bad.

Take the scenic route along Tioga Road

If Tioga Road is still open, take advantage of it. Autumn can be the last chance of the year to see Yosemite’s high country before snow closes the road for the season.

The drive towards Tenaya Lake and Tuolumne Meadows is worth doing even when the foliage is subtle. Look for pockets of golden aspen and low-growing plants changing color along the way. Pack layers, food and water, because services become limited late in the season. Check current road conditions before leaving. Sierra weather enjoys changing the plan without asking permission.

Make time for Glacier Point Road

Glacier Point Road is another excellent fall option when conditions allow. Look around Summit Meadow for aspen and enjoy the drive out to Glacier Point for one of Yosemite’s biggest panoramic views.

This is a good choice when you want maximum scenery without committing to a long hike. Bring a warm layer even if the Valley feels comfortable. Elevation has a habit of making an autumn breeze feel much more serious.

Explore Wawona and the southern end of the park

Wawona tends to feel quieter and more relaxed. You may find black oak, dogwood, maple and cottonwood changing color around the area.

Pair the drive with a visit to Mariposa Grove. The giant sequoias stay green, of course, but the cooler temperatures and golden autumn light make the grove particularly beautiful. It is also a lovely reminder that a great fall landscape does not have to be entirely orange.

Turn the colour hunt into a proper getaway

Our best advice is not to chase every recommended viewpoint in one day. Pick two or three areas, leave room for unexpected stops and give yourself time to enjoy the place you are staying.
