Summer may get most of the attention, but late October might be one of Yosemite’s most underrated times of year.
The summer crowds have thinned. The days are cooler. Fall colour is spreading through the Sierra foothills. And there is something particularly good about ending a day outside by coming back to a lake house or mountain lodge when the evening air actually makes you want to stay indoors.

Late October gives you two trips in one.

Friday: Drive up after work, check in, open a bottle of wine and settle in.
Saturday: Yosemite day.
Sunday: Slow breakfast, explore Groveland or one of the local fall events, then head home.

One planning note: late October is a transition season. Higher-elevation roads can close when winter weather arrives, and the National Park Service prohibits overnight parking along Tioga and Glacier Point Roads starting October 15.
